ROSABURN CAFÉArran
Heritage Museum
You enter through the museum, so that sets the scene. This is main street 19th century Brodick where horses were hoofed, butter was churned and bannocks baked on girdles while tongues gossiped. Turn left along the row of cottages facing the Rosa Burn and into a haven of modern traditional Scottish baking and cooking. The old kitchen with its fireplace is out of action now but the room has been decorated in crisp whites and pastel blues as a cosy little cafe. Outside, there are tables on a lawn which stretches down to the river. There are also several old farm tractors and an activities shed which make it a great venue for lively children of all ages. And to eat? - besides the irresistible fresh cream, home-made meringues. Well, you can choose from the 'Specials' board of dishes freshly prepared daily, either soup, pate (served with Arran oatcakes) or dish-of-the-day. Other choices include freshly made sandwiches, baguettes and pasta dishes while the sweet menu is dominated by Arran ice cream in five hard-to-choose-from permutations. There is also a delectable carrot cake. Susie Williamson and Aileen Wright are the talented team who cook, bake, serve, clear up and wash dishes, besides smiling both a friendly welcome and a cheery goodbye.
