MACHRIE HALL GOLF COURSE TEAROOM
"It's worth sussing out the golf course tearooms," advised one resident Arranach. And I did. Some are better than others, but this one, to my mind, provided one of the best of the home-bakes-plus-informal-eating which is in the old wood-paneled village hall at the side of the road. It's a useful pit-stop for refreshments on the quieter side of the island which is well frequented by a steady stream of golfers and passing cyclists. A 'blackboard' daily changing selection of snacks included Carrot and Leek soup and baked potatoes with fillings. Other options were Creeler's smoked fish as well as free range pork from Auchaleffan Farm. While there is a range of home bakes for tea time snacks including well-made scones, and velvety textured sponges, pilgrimages are made from the other end of the island for their home-made meringues with lemon curd and fresh cream. If you're lucky, there might be a jar of the delectable lemon curd for sale. If not, there may be an equally delectable bar of home-made all-butter tablet. Light snack - £3 - £6.00. Open April - mid October
