LOCHSIDE GUEST HOUSE
Though the Bannatynes have moved from Fairhaven to this new guest house beside the Port-nan-Lochan Fishery, run by George Bannatyne, the style remains the same. In the early days of Arran holidaying this would have been described as a 'boarding house'. Nothing wrong with that. It reminded me of my early childhood summers on Arran when the best landladies provided every comfort along with no-nonsense, satisfying, freshly-prepared and well-cooked fare. Meals were a communal affair, at long tables and a supper of tea and home-made cake was served in the lounge round the fire at around 10pm. Generosity, friendliness and genuine concern to make the visitors holiday a success was their aim and they succeeded. As they do here. The new house has views out over the fresh water fishery lochs which are stocked mostly with rainbow trout with facilities for both fly and bait fishing. Trout may be available for sale and may also be on the guest house dinner menu. Open all year. Meals for residents only. |
