Up bumpy farm lanes, just outside Brodick, is a traditional red sandstone farmhouse in a secluded garden with its front steps decorated with colourful pots of fuschia. Inside, the style is chintz-and-old-lace with family memorabilia and a half finished tapestry in the lounge. In the small dining room, the fixed price dinner (£17.50) is for residents only; a daily changing menu with a choice of two main courses. (Vegetarian option by request only, prior notice preferred and you may be asked to make main course decisions early in the day. Diners may bring own wine).

On the night I visited tender Arran beef was served with a well made sauce and selection of fresh vegetables. It was the height of the strawberry season and, instead of the usual strawberries and cream, a luscious strawberry pie had been made. Some garden produce is used including herbs and soft fruits.
