Alfresco tables and benches are on its seafront terrace while on closer inspection there is a daily changing blackboard menu speaking of freshness and quality. Look our for Arran shellfish, especially lobsters and crabs, also Auchaleffan free range, 'organic' chickens as well as unusual breeds such as Gloucester Old Spot pork which has a special flavour. While the lunchtime selection is simpler, at dinner the choice is from a selection of four starters and four main courses including, a vegetarian option of stuffed Mediterranean vegetables. Prices range from £9.95 - £15.95, for main courses. But first, a mushroom soup came in a small white tureen, wafting good aromas. Flavour and "body" had come from a subtle combining of stock-pot reductions .It may no longer be fashionable to 'Frenchify' menus, yet there is still a need to retain some of the old classical French habits: the stocks and well-reduced sauces which are the basis of flavour. Those who take the trouble, as they do here, to make some effort with this behind the scenes attention to good cooking not only provide more enjoyable food, they also help to maintain the rich Scottish broth tradition which was historically influenced by the French.
